The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and given more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a safety action after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a paperwork permitting the arrest, the magistrate said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio, who works as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or see it all from your smartphone there on your couch? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so backers could seek divine intervention for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of Justice Moraes's decision was the chance of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a embassy office", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the federal district, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.

Global Responses

His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader President Trump, causing him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with tracking devices.

They also asked that he be allowed to leave his home for healthcare, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was found guilty of orchestrating a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the military leaders. The current president was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, numerous Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the 2026 presidential election.
